WEEE Take-Back

Recycling your old fire and security equipment

Fire detection, security and CCTV equipment is electrical waste when it reaches the end of its life. Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations 2013 it must not go in general waste or skips — it has to be collected separately and sent for proper treatment, so that the metals, plastics and batteries inside it can be recovered and the hazardous parts dealt with safely.

As a distributor of electrical equipment, Huvo offers free take-back of old equipment when you buy new from us. This page explains how it works.

What we’ll take back

When you buy new equipment from Huvo, you can return old equipment of the same type or function to us free of charge — one for one, whatever the brand, wherever it was originally bought.

Buy ten new detectors and you can hand us ten old ones. Buy a new control panel and you can bring back the one it’s replacing.

How to return it

  • Bring it to our trade counter at 14 Gilesea Park, Swansea, SA6 8RJ, during opening hours.
  • Quote the invoice number for the new equipment, and return the old items within 28 days of the invoice date.
  • Items should be intact and clean — we can’t accept anything that is leaking, contaminated, dismantled or otherwise unsafe to handle.
  • Please don’t post equipment back to us without arranging it first.

We’ll record what we’ve received and make sure it reaches an authorised treatment facility.

Ionisation smoke detectors

Some older smoke detectors are of the ionisation type and contain a very small sealed radioactive source. They are safe to handle and return, but they need a specialist disposal route.

Keep them intact — never open or dismantle one — and let us know when you bring them in so we can keep them separate.

Batteries

Sealed lead-acid and lithium batteries can be returned with the equipment they came from. Please tape over the terminals of any loose battery before you bring it in.

If you can’t get to Swansea

If returning equipment to our trade counter isn’t practical, you can take WEEE to your local household waste recycling centre or arrange collection through a licensed waste carrier.

Businesses must use an authorised carrier and keep the waste transfer note — you can check a carrier’s registration on the Natural Resources Wales or Environment Agency public registers.
