What is the EACIE Enclosure and what is it used for?

The EACIE Enclosure™ is a specialist security cabinet designed to house evacuation alert control and indicating equipment (EACIE) in buildings containing flats or maisonettes. It forms part of an evacuation alert system used specifically by the fire and rescue service to assist in managing fire incidents. The enclosure provides secure protection for this critical equipment while ensuring authorized emergency service personnel can quickly access it during an emergency using the Gerda One Key System®.

What makes the EACIE Enclosure secure against vandalism and break-in attempts?

The EACIE Enclosure™ incorporates multiple advanced security features. It’s successfully tested to STS205 Issue 5 BR2 (Level II) for burglary resistance and features a 2-point locking mechanism with a patented integral cylinder offering 4 billion key combinations. The lock includes anti-glue facility and anti-drill protection using the Hard Soft System with multiple metal composites. The engineering prevents cylinder extraction, hinges are positioned internally to prevent vandalism, and the lock is strategically positioned on the right side to avoid vandal attention and restrict manoeuvring room. The enclosure is Secured by Design approved, which is a police-preferred specification.

How does the Gerda One Key System work and who can access the enclosure?

The Gerda One Key System® is a registered key system used by fire and rescue services across the UK. The lock is designed to be operated exclusively by the fire and rescue service using their Gerda keys. The unique shape of the Gerda 3D dimensional key® is trademarked and protected against unauthorized copying, ensuring only authorized emergency personnel can access the enclosure. This provides security against unauthorized access while ensuring fire crews can quickly access evacuation alert equipment during emergencies without delay.

What are the installation requirements and considerations?

The EACIE Enclosure™ weighs nominally 69kg, which requires careful manual handling procedures to be followed (refer to HSE guidelines). Installation should be planned with appropriate lifting equipment such as a forklift or material lift with counterweight base. A risk assessment should be carried out prior to installation. The enclosure is supplied with installation instructions, masonry fixings, and a fitting template. However, the supplied masonry fixings may not be appropriate for all substrates – appropriate fixings must be used to support the EACIE Enclosure™ and fire alarm panel. The pull handle is supplied separately to avoid damage in transit.

Can the EACIE Enclosure be installed outdoors?

No, whilst the EACIE Enclosure™ is guaranteed against corrosion and offers weather proofing, it is designed to be sited internally within a building in line with BS8629:2019 requirements. The enclosure should be installed in an internal location within buildings containing flats or maisonettes where it provides appropriate protection for evacuation alert control equipment while remaining accessible to the fire and rescue service.

What certifications and standards does the EACIE Enclosure meet?

The EACIE Enclosure™ is designed and developed in accordance with BS8629:2019 and is Secured by Design approved. It’s successfully tested to STS205 Issue 5 BR2 (Level II) for burglary resistance of security cabinets and enclosures. The lock cylinder is certified to EN1303:2015, achieving best grades in all categories. The system forms part of a British Standards Kitemarked system to BS3621, BS8621, and BS10621 (KM524077, KM524079, KM524081). The product is certified through a third party certification body and manufactured by an ISO 9001:2015 certified company, ensuring the highest standards of quality and reliability.
