What is a Type A outstation and who should use it?

A Type A outstation as defined in BS 5839-9:2021 is primarily intended for use by building management, fire wardens and firefighters. It can function as both a fire telephone and a disabled refuge call point, providing professional-grade emergency communications.

What is the difference between ViLX-OSA-R and ViLX-OSA?

The ViLX-OSA-R features a distinctive RAL3001 red painted steel finish with high contrast white screen printing, while the ViLX-OSA has a brushed stainless steel finish with red screen printing. The ViLX-OSA-R is slightly lighter (1.98kg vs 2.2kg) and uses CR4 material construction. Both models offer identical functionality and BS 5839-9:2021 compliance.

What height should the outstation be mounted at?

The outstation should be mounted at a height of 1300mm to 1400mm from the floor to the centre line of the unit to comply with Building Regulations Document M (Access for the Disabled).

Can the ViLX-OSA-R be flush mounted?

Yes, when flush mounting, a cut-out of 305mm by 155mm is recommended. The optional red bezel (ViLX-OBZ-R) slides over the box and is fixed to the wall using suitable sealant or mastic, reducing the need to stock separate flush and surface mount variants.

What cable type is recommended and what distance can be achieved?

Enhanced fire resistant 2 core 1.5mm screened cable is recommended, which can run up to 500m from the compatible panel.

Is the outstation accessible for wheelchair users?

Yes, when used as a refuge point, suitable space must be allowed so the system can be accessed by a parked wheelchair. The mounting height of 1300-1400mm also complies with accessibility requirements.

Does the outstation support hearing impaired users?

Yes, the ViLX-OSA-R includes an induction loop coil (telecoil) in the handset specifically for hearing impaired users, compliant with BS EN 60118-4:2015+A1:2018. The system also features high contrast signage in line with RNIB guidelines.

What locations are suitable for Type A outstations?

Type A outstations should be located as described in BS 9999:2017 and Building Regulations Approved Document B. These locations should have low background noise; otherwise, acoustic hoods may need to be considered to ensure clear communication.

What standards does the ViLX-OSA-R comply with?

The ViLX-OSA-R is fully compliant with BS 5839-9:2021, BS 9999:2017, and EN 60118-4:2015+A1:2018 for product family standards. It also meets EMC standards EN 55035:2017+A11:2020 and EN 55032:2015+A1:2020, plus LVD standard EN IEC62368-1:2020+A11:2020.
