Summary

The Vox Ignis Unicorn Voice Ceiling Speaker with VAD has been specifically designed to complement the Unicorn Voice PAVA range, featuring low wattage tappings intended to operate at full volume when used with the Unicorn Voice system. This innovative solution addresses the growing need for integrated voice alarm and visual alarm device functionality in modern fire safety installations.

The unique combined VAD/Speaker design meets the requirements of the Equality Act and Building Regulations by providing visual alarm capability alongside audio announcements. Unlike traditional installations where VADs are connected to fire alarm systems and may not activate during manual emergency announcements, this integrated solution ensures VADs are triggered via the voice alarm system in all situations, reducing load on fire alarm system loops.

Installation efficiency is enhanced through the innovative 1st fix termination plate design, which accommodates multiple cable entry options and features anti-vibration terminals to prevent common open circuit faults. This allows wiring tests to be completed without additional connections, with the loudspeaker simply connected via plug-in terminals when ceilings are in place and the site is ready for commissioning.

FAQ

What is a VAD and why is it integrated with the speaker?

A VAD (Visual Alarm Device) provides visual indication during emergency situations to comply with the Equality Act and Building Regulations. The integrated design ensures that VADs activate during both automatic fire alarms and manual emergency announcements, unlike traditional systems where VADs connected to fire alarm panels may not trigger during manual announcements.

How does the 1st fix termination plate work?

The 1st fix termination plate allows electrical contractors to complete wiring and testing before the ceiling is finished. The plate accommodates 2 cables for loop wiring or 1x M25 flexible conduit entry. The speaker unit is later connected via plug-in terminals when the ceiling is complete and the site is ready for commissioning.

Which power tapping should I select for my installation?

Power tapping selection depends on your zone requirements and desired sound pressure level. Higher tappings (4W, 2W, 1W) provide greater volume but consume more power from your amplifier. Lower tappings (0.5W, 0.25W, 0.125W) are suitable for background areas or where multiple speakers are used. Consult your system designer for optimal tapping selection.

Is this speaker suitable for outdoor or high-humidity environments?

The speaker has an IP21C ingress protection rating and operates in humidity levels up to 80% non-condensing, making it suitable for most indoor commercial environments. However, it is not designed for outdoor use or areas with high moisture exposure such as swimming pools or shower facilities.

Can this speaker be used with non-Unicorn Voice amplifiers?

While specifically designed for Unicorn Voice PAVA systems, the speaker uses standard 100V line tappings and could potentially work with other 100V line amplifiers. However, the VAD functionality requires 18-30 VDC supply which may not be available from other manufacturers’ amplifiers.
