VESDA VLP (LaserPLUS) Aspirating Smoke Detector
Obsolete
Summary
The VESDA VLP detector is the central element of the VESDA ASD product range, delivering very early warning smoke detection capabilities with an exceptional alarm sensitivity range of 0.005%–20% obscuration/m (0.0015%–6.25% obscuration/ft). Classified as a “Very Early Warning Smoke Detector”, the VLP detects fire at the earliest possible stage and reliably measures very low to extremely high concentrations of smoke.
Using unique detection principles and a stable Class 1 laser light source, the VLP employs advanced features including AutoLearn™ technology, VESDAnet™ communication, and referencing capabilities. The modular design allows for flexible installation options including recessed mounting, making it ideal for demanding commercial, industrial and critical infrastructure applications where early fire detection is paramount.

FAQ
What is the sensitivity range of the VESDA VLP detector?
The VLP offers an alarm sensitivity range of 0.005%–20% obscuration/m (0.0015%–6.25% obscuration/ft), with four configurable alarm levels: Alert, Action, Fire 1, and Fire 2.
What area coverage can the VLP provide?
The VLP can typically cover up to 2,000 m² (21,520 sq.ft), depending on local codes and standards. Coverage is determined using the ASPIRE™ design tool for optimal pipe network configuration.
How many sampling pipes can be connected to the VLP?
The VLP supports four inlet pipes with a total aggregate pipe length of 200 m (656 ft) and maximum single length of 100 m (328 ft). Each pipe has individual airflow monitoring and supervision.
What is AutoLearn™ and how does it work?
AutoLearn™ monitors the ambient environment and automatically sets the most appropriate alarm thresholds during commissioning. It operates for a minimum of 15 minutes to a maximum of 15 days (recommended minimum 1 day) whilst maintaining pre-set threshold values.
What is the referencing feature and when is it used?
Referencing compensates for external pollution that may enter through “fresh air make up” in air handling systems. It ensures external pollution doesn’t interfere with true smoke level detection in the protected environment, preventing nuisance alarms.
What power requirements does the VLP have?
The VLP operates on 18-30 VDC supply voltage. Power consumption varies by aspirator speed: at 3000 rpm it consumes 5.8W quiescent/6.96W with alarm, whilst at 4200 rpm it consumes 8.16W quiescent/9.36W with alarm.
What communication options are available?
The VLP uses VESDAnet™, a fault-tolerant bi-directional communication protocol that allows continued operation during single point wiring failures. It enables system programming from a single location and supports the modular VESDA system architecture.
