Summary
The Nittan EV-IO-420 is a sophisticated 4-20mA Input/Output Module with integrated short circuit isolator, designed for use with Evolution analogue addressable fire alarm systems. This versatile module combines advanced monitoring capabilities with robust output control, making it ideal for integrating temperature sensors, gas detectors, and other analogue devices into fire safety and building management systems.
Certified to EN 54-17 and EN 54-18 standards, the EV-IO-420 features two configurable inputs and a powerful 5A relay output. Input 1 supports 4-20mA sensors in either current sink or source mode, while Input 2 provides Class B dry contact monitoring. The built-in -ve line short circuit isolator protects the system integrity by automatically isolating faults whilst maintaining communication from the opposite side of the loop.
With its flexible configuration options including failsafe mode for door release applications, normally open/closed input selection, and comprehensive LED status indicators, the EV-IO-420 delivers reliable performance in demanding fire safety applications. The module operates on standard 20-38Vdc loop voltage and requires an external 19.2-28.8Vdc power supply for 4-20mA sensor operation.

FAQs
What is the difference between current sink and current source mode?
Current sink mode means the module provides the return path for current flowing from the sensor, while current source mode means the module supplies current to the sensor. The mode is selected using the slide switch on the module and depends on the type of 4-20mA sensor being connected. Refer to your sensor documentation to determine which mode is required.
Can I use the EV-IO-420 with Advanced MxPro4 panels?
No, the EV-IO-420 is not compatible with Advanced MxPro4 (Mx4000) panels. It is designed exclusively for use with Nittan Evolution Protocol systems. For MxPro4 applications, you should use the non-SCI version of the module.
What is failsafe mode and when should I use it?
Failsafe mode is configured via DIP switch 1 and causes the relay to energize when loop power is lost. This is essential for door release applications where doors must unlock during power failure for emergency egress. In normal mode, the relay de-energizes when power is lost.
What resistors are required for proper operation?
The module requires a 10kΩ End-of-Line (EOL) resistor for fault monitoring on both inputs. For alarm condition detection on Input 2, either a 470Ω or 680Ω alarm resistor is required. These resistors are supplied with the module.
How do I set the module address?
The module address is set using the EV-AD2-EXT handheld programmer connected to the address setting port. The factory default address is 1, and addresses can be changed whether the loop power is on or off. Address setting can be performed even after the module is connected to the loop.
What does the short circuit isolator do?
The built-in short circuit isolator (SCI) automatically detects and isolates short circuits between L+ and L- on the loop. When activated, it protects the rest of the system while allowing communication to continue from the opposite side of the fault. The isolator automatically resets when the short circuit is cleared.
Can I disable the short circuit isolator function?
Yes, the SCI function can be bypassed using the jumper provided. However, this is not recommended as it removes an important layer of system protection. Note that it is not possible to mix -ve and older +ve isolator styles on the same system.
What external power supply voltage is needed for 4-20mA operation?
The external power supply for 4-20mA sensor operation must be between 19.2Vdc and 28.8Vdc, with a maximum current capacity of 1A. This powers the connected 4-20mA sensor independently from the loop supply.
