Huvo Partners with Patol for Linear Heat Detection

We’re excited to announce our partnership with Patol, a UK-based fire detection specialist known for their precision engineering and reliable Linear Heat Detection Cable (LHDC) systems.

Linear Heat Detection Cable (LHDC) Systems

LHDC is a specialised cable that continuously monitors temperature along its length, making it ideal for detecting overheating or fire hazards in applications where heat needs to be monitored over long distances with high sensitivity.

It provides early detection of fire and overheating in situations where other forms of detection are impractical due to scale or cost. This makes it particularly suited for large-scale applications such as tunnels, car parks, and extensive commercial or industrial spaces.

Built to withstand extreme environments, LHDC is also an excellent solution for settings with airborne particulates. This makes it especially reliable in harsh or dusty and dirty environments like recycling plants.

Additionally, LHDC is the go-to fire detection solution in industrial applications where equipment or processes generate heat, such as power plants, server rooms or manufacturing facilities. Critical equipment, machinery and wiring can be monitored to detect potential failures early.

There are two types of LHDC: Analogue and Digital.

Digital LHDC

The Digital LHDC provides an advanced solution for environments requiring highly sensitive and flexible fire detection. Response time is rapid – a small fire/heat source will be detected in just a few seconds. Constructed with twisted copper-coated spring steel conductors, the cable reacts to heat by melting at pre-set temperature thresholds, creating a closed circuit. For that reason, the system is not resettable, and the fused section will need replacing (which can be easily achieved with 2 junction boxes).

In terms of installation, Digital LHDC offers a lot more flexibility than Analogue. The digital system works in lengths even as small as one centimetre. It can be installed directly at the point of risk, making it ideal for confined spaces like production machinery or electrical cabinets. It can also monitor huge runs of cable—up to 2,000 metres (or 10,000 metres with DDLX controller) for extensive coverage without sacrificing precision.

The digital LHDC offers a fully approved EN54 p 28 solution (when using the DIM-28 controller). The system is also SIL-2 certified, and the flame-retardant (FRPE) cable is UL listed.

Analogue LHDC

The system is resettable, making it ideal for maintenance and testing but in many ways it lacks the scope offered by its digital counterpart. It consists of a coaxial cable constructed with a copper-coated steel central conductor, inner insulation (dielectric), tinned copper braid layer, and a flame-retardant polyethylene (FRPE) protective sheath.

As heat increases, the resistance of the dielectric changes, resulting in voltage rise. The controller monitors the voltage level, and it goes into alarm upon reaching a certain threshold (which is adjustable). Typical zone length can be up to 300-500m, depending on the environment. The analogue controller is configurable, offering sensitivity adjustments between 1V and 3V, and can also be interfaced with fire control panels for easy integration.

After the fire event, the cable resets itself and can be used again without the need to replace the heated section.

Why We Chose Patol as Our LHDC Partner

Founded in 1968, Patol was established as a privately owned UK company that over the years has built a solid reputation in the development and manufacturing of fire detection solutions. One of their flagship systems is Linear Heat Detection Cable (LHDC). Their long history of innovation, quality control, and commitment to customer satisfaction has helped Patol earn its place as a trusted brand in industries where fire safety is critical. From 2022 Patol is a part of the Sdiptech Group.

Proven Engineering Expertise

Patol has an established track record of engineering excellence, which is demonstrated through the continual refinement of their LHDC systems. Their expertise ensures that every product delivers maximum reliability, on every stage of the project. Patol’s engineering teams work rigorously to meet specific fire protection needs, offering solutions that suit a range of industries, from petrochemical facilities to high-risk manufacturing environments.

Exceptional Build Quality and Durability

Patol cables are built to last, with non-metallic sheaths designed for harsh, corrosive environments like chemical plants. For more extreme applications, such as oil and gas rigs, they offer 4-weaved stainless-steel jackets capable of providing extra mechanical protection. This level of durability goes beyond the basic PVC derivatives many competitors rely on, offering more robust protection in demanding environments.

Precision and Reliability

Unlike many competitors, Patol conducts multiple tests in different stages during manufacturing and supply. A specialised test furnace is used to rigorously evaluate each cable before it leaves the facility. This ensures that every unit meets strict standards, eliminating the risk of batch inconsistencies.

Enhanced Flexibility and Customisation

Patol’s analogue LHDC offers adjustable sensitivity via control units, allowing installers to ensure the system is perfectly matched to the environment. The digital versions extend up to 240°C without the need for calibration, making for a straightforward installation process.

Comprehensive Service Offering

Patol provides a genuine end-to-end solution, ensuring a smooth process from start to finish. They offer site surveys, expert technical support for installation and maintenance advice. Whether it’s recommended testing procedures or troubleshooting, they will ensure your system functions optimally throughout its lifetime.

Flexible Ordering and Cost Efficiency

Patol understands that each project has unique requirements, so they offer bespoke cable orders, selling by the metre, allowing customers to order the cable cut to length. This approach helps reduce waste and costs by ensuring that only the necessary cable length is purchased. Additionally, Patol’s comprehensive stock levels ensure that products are readily available to meet urgent project needs.

Innovative Controllers for Greater Control

Patol’s EN-28 approved controllers handle up to 2,000m or 10,0000m zones and are equipped with advanced fault monitoring capabilities. These controllers detect potential issues early, ensuring the system remains in optimal condition. Their controllers offer more than just detection—integrating seamlessly into both conventional fire alarm systems and analogue addressable systems, providing a versatile solution across diverse applications.

We’re excited to offer Patol’s advanced fire detection solutions and look forward to helping you find the right system for your next project. For more information or to request a quote, visit our website today. Our team at Huvo is ready to help you integrate the perfect fire detection system.
