What is the difference between Type A and Type B sounder operation?

The R100-SA is certified for both Type A (indoor) and Type B (outdoor) operation. Type A certification applies when using the standard shallow backbox supplied with the device, making it suitable for indoor installations with IP21C rating. Type B certification applies when the R100-SA is fitted with the optional R100-SM/WP outdoor backbox, which provides enhanced environmental protection with IP33C rating, making it suitable for outdoor or exposed locations. This dual capability provides flexibility to use the same device across different environmental conditions within a building project.

How many alarm tones are available and can they be changed after installation?

The R100-SA offers 16 selectable alarm tone patterns, providing exceptional versatility for different applications and building types. These tones can be configured via the Fyreye II system, allowing you to select the most appropriate tone for your specific application – whether that’s a distinctive tone for different alarm conditions, compliance with local preferences, or matching existing sounders in phased installations. The tones are addressable settings, meaning they can be changed remotely through the system without needing to physically access the device.

What is the built-in short circuit isolator and why is it important?

The built-in short circuit isolator (SCI) is a crucial safety feature that protects the fire alarm loop. If a short circuit fault occurs on the loop cable or at the device, the isolator automatically disconnects the affected section, preventing the fault from disabling the entire loop. This ensures that devices on other parts of the loop continue to function normally, maintaining system integrity and compliance with fire safety regulations. The SCI eliminates the need for separate external isolator modules, reducing installation time and cost while improving system reliability.

How does the pluggable terminal connector benefit installation?

The 4-way pluggable terminal connector significantly speeds up installation, particularly during the second fix phase. During first fix, the cable can be prepared and terminated into the backbox connector while the device itself is safely stored. During second fix, the R100-SA simply plugs into the prepared connector, reducing installation time and the risk of damage to the device during construction. This also makes future maintenance easier, as the device can be quickly disconnected and replaced if necessary without disturbing the cable terminations.

What is the power consumption and how many devices can be connected per loop?

The R100-SA is extremely power efficient with a quiescent (standby) current of just 700μA (0.7mA) and alarm current ranging from 2.6mA to 5.5mA depending on the sounder volume setting selected. This low power consumption means you can connect many devices to a single loop. The exact number depends on your panel’s loop capacity and the settings you configure, but the low quiescent current means the device has minimal impact on loop loading when in standby mode, which is most of its operational life.

Can the R100-SA be used outdoors without the weatherproof backbox?

No, the R100-SA should only be used outdoors when fitted with the R100-SM/WP weatherproof outdoor backbox (available separately as part number 42-640). The standard configuration with the shallow backbox provides IP21C rating, which is suitable for indoor use only. The outdoor backbox upgrades the assembly to IP33C rating and provides proper cable entry glands, making it suitable for outdoor and exposed locations. Using the device outdoors without the proper backbox would void certifications and could lead to premature failure due to moisture ingress or environmental damage.
