Why choose a fire alarm kit?

Fire alarm kits simplify the process of selecting a system by grouping together the devices typically required for a property. Instead of choosing individual alarms separately, kits provide a structured approach based on how systems are commonly installed in UK homes.

Choosing a kit ensures correct coverage across your property based on size and layout, guaranteed compatibility between all devices with no risk of mixing incompatible brands or systems, a straightforward installation process with everything needed in one order and confidence that the system meets standard UK domestic fire alarm guidance.

Choose by property size

Fire alarm systems are sized based on the number of floors in the property rather than the number of bedrooms, as the number of floors determines how many escape routes need to be protected.

Small kits

Small kits are suitable for single floor properties including one and two bedroom flats and bungalows. A typical small kit includes one smoke alarm, one heat alarm and one CO alarm.

Medium kits

Medium kits are suitable for two floor properties including two and three bedroom houses. A typical medium kit includes two smoke alarms, one heat alarm and one CO alarm.

Large kits

Large kits are suitable for three floor properties including larger houses and some four bedroom homes. A typical large kit includes three smoke alarms, one heat alarm and one CO alarm.

Grade D1 kits

Grade D1 kits use mains-powered alarms with a sealed ten year battery backup. They are designed for long-term fixed installations and are the recommended choice for most properties, particularly rental properties. A qualified electrician is required for installation. Alarms are interconnected via the hardwired interlink connection.

Grade D1 with Wireless Interlink kits use the same mains-powered alarms with a sealed ten year battery backup but include RF wireless interlink modules as standard. These are suitable for existing properties where interlink wiring is not available between alarm positions. A qualified electrician is still required for mains connection.

Grade F1 kits

Grade F1 kits use battery-powered alarms with built-in wireless interconnection. They are suitable for existing properties where running mains wiring is not practical and for installations where a faster, more flexible setup is preferred.

Fire Alarm Grades Explained

What is included in a typical kit?

All kits include smoke alarms for escape routes such as hallways and landings, a heat alarm for the kitchen and a carbon monoxide alarm.

We recommend interconnection between all devices so that when one alarm activates all alarms sound throughout the property.

Properties with fuel-burning appliances in more than one room will require additional CO alarms.

Additional CO alarms

One CO alarm is included as standard in every kit. Properties with a fuel-burning appliance in more than one room will require an additional CO alarm for each affected room.

Fuel-burning appliances include gas boilers, oil boilers, wood-burning stoves and solid fuel fires.

Additional CO alarms are compatible with all kit types. If you are unsure how many CO alarms your property requires, the System Finder will confirm this based on your answers.

Scotland – additional requirements

In Scotland, all homes are required to have a smoke alarm in the main living room in addition to the standard escape route detection included in these kits.

One additional smoke alarm is required per main living area. Additional smoke alarms are available separately and can be added to any kit to meet Scottish requirements.

The System Finder will account for Scottish requirements automatically if Scotland is selected.

HMO properties

These kits are designed for standard domestic properties. If you are purchasing for an HMO property, please refer to our HMO Fire Alarm Requirements page before purchasing.

HMO fire alarm requirements can vary by property type, size and local authority licensing conditions. In many cases a fire risk assessment will be necessary.

HMO fire alarm requirements can vary significantly by property.

Choosing the right kit

The correct fire alarm kit depends on the number of floors in the property, whether mains wiring is available and whether the system is being installed by a qualified electrician or as a retrofit without wiring.

For most properties where a qualified electrician is carrying out the installation, a Grade D1 kit is the recommended choice.

For existing properties where a mains-powered system is preferred but interlink wiring is not available, the D1 with Wireless Interlink kit provides a complete mains-powered solution without the need for additional cabling between alarm positions.

For existing properties where running mains wiring is not practical, a Grade F1 battery kit provides the same level of protection without any cabling requirement.

If you are unsure which kit is right for your property, the System Finder will confirm the correct size, system type and any additional devices needed based on your specific situation.
