Based on UK fire safety guidance
Built around BS 5839-6 principles, property type, location, layout and installation route.
Step 1
This helps us understand whether the property is owner-occupied or rented, so the correct fire safety rules can be applied.
Step 2
Choose the second option if your tenants are individuals or groups who rent separately or are not a single family, even if they share the kitchen or bathroom. This helps us identify shared houses, which have different fire safety rules.
Step 3
Count everyone who lives there, including children.
Step 4
Only a straightforward shared house or flat can continue without a fire risk assessment. Bedsits, self-contained units and uncertain layouts need professional confirmation.
Step 5
For properties in Northern Ireland please contact us directly.
Step 6
Include all habitable floors including basements, lower ground floors and converted loft spaces.
Step 7
For example living rooms, lounges and open-plan living spaces. If your kitchen and living area are open plan, count them as one living area.
Step 9
Any room with a gas boiler, oil boiler, wood-burning stove, solid fuel fire or gas cooker where applicable. Count each room separately. If a room contains more than one appliance, count it once. If unsure, select the higher number. If your property has fuel-burning appliances in more than 5 rooms, please contact us directly.

Recommended system
System layout
Please note that in this hardwired Grade D1 system, the smoke and heat alarms interlink through the wired connection, but the CO alarm operates as a standalone unit. This is fully compliant in all parts of the UK, as there is no requirement for CO alarms to be interlinked with the fire detection devices.

Before you continue
Adjust your system
Your recommended system already covers the essential areas of your property and meets UK domestic fire protection requirements. You can extend coverage or add additional features if needed.
Small HMO guidance
Based on your answers, your property may be a House in Multiple Occupation (HMO) — a shared home rented to people who are not a single household. That changes how fire safety is handled, so we are not able to give you a standard recommendation to buy right away.
Why we cannot give a blanket recommendation
HMO fire alarm requirements are not set by a single national standard. They depend on your local authority licensing conditions, and they can vary from one council to another. Because of that, we cannot reliably tell you online exactly what your property needs.
The good news
For a smaller shared house like yours — up to four people, one or two floors, with a straightforward layout — a domestic Grade D interlinked system is often acceptable. But often is not always, so it needs confirming for your specific property.
What to do next
Professional assessment
If you would prefer professional confirmation, arrange a fire risk assessment with a competent fire safety professional.

Any assessment should be arranged directly with an independent competent professional.
Assessment required
Based on your answers, your property appears to be a House in Multiple Occupation that needs a professional fire risk assessment to determine the right fire alarm system. Larger or more complex shared housing, bedsits, self-contained units, or buildings of three or more floors typically need a Grade A or mixed system specified by a competent professional.
Professional assessment
A competent fire safety professional can confirm the system type, detection level and installation requirements for your property.

Typical costs
Fire risk assessments should be arranged directly with an independent competent professional. Huvo is not responsible for assessments or works carried out. Once you have a specification from your fire risk assessment, Huvo can supply the equipment, including Grade A systems.
